Title |
Iron Age: Ribbed Terret Harness Fitting |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy ribbed harness fitting / terret ring of late Iron Age – early Roman date 100 BC – 100 AD. The terret is sub oval (D shaped) in plan with an irregular sub-oval (D shaped) cross section. The attachment bar is oval in cross section and flanked by two circular mouldings. Each of these moulding has a central circumferential groove separating the mouldings into two parts. The two flanking circular mouldings differ from the other ribs present on the terret. There are a total of nine ribs (excluding the flanking mouldings) and all are broadly similar to one another. Each of the ribs expands from the outer face of the terret, and is broadly wedge shaped in profile. There is no trace of the ribs on the inside face of the terret only the exterior. Each of the ribs is divided by a circumferential groove, similar to that described for the circular flanking mouldings. There is no evidence for other cast decorative motifs or enameled or applied decoration. The left side of the terret ring is better preserved than the right. This is likely to be due to burial conditions. The inner ring of the terret is slightly worn on the right hand side; however this may also be due to the burial conditions. The terret is a mid green colour with an even, but slightly corroded patina which covers all surfaces. The corrosion and slight abrasion is most distinctive on the right hand side of the ring. This has distorted the ribs and flanking mouldings. A light green powdery corrosion product is present here. A direct parallel for the terret has not been found. A number of these terrets have been recorded from late Iron Age and Roman contexts often in association with other harness equipment or carts. |
