Title
Irish gunmoney shilling of James II
Description
English: Post medieval coin; Struck bronze “Irish Gunmoney” shilling of James II, issued 1689 (month illegible). Section broken off to one side of coin.

Obv. Bust of king facing left. Very worn. [IA]COBVS.II./[DEI.GRATIA.] Rev Crown with crossed sceptres. XII above crown. J and R to either side of crown. 1689-MAG.[BR.FRA.]ET.[…missing…]X XII J R

These coins were issued by James II to his supporters while he was in Ireland persuing his claim to regain the throne. The idea was that when he was back in power they could be exchanged for their value in official gold and silver coins. The exchange would happen month by month in the order in which they were issued. James’ failure to regain the throne meant that this never happened. The value of the coin is shown in Roman numerals above the crown on the reverse and the month of issue is written below the crown.
