English: A series of iridescent beetles in the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
These specimens were acquired by Charles Stewart in the 1890s. Some show bright iridescent colours. These result from the refraction of ligh rather than pigments in the tissues. Others are examples of protective colouration and mimicry to camouflage against predators. From left to right and from top to bottom (exception the upper line): Sagra splendida, Sagra femorata, Sagra splendida, Sagra superba, Phanaeus demon, unidentified, Stephanorrhina guttata, Coryphocera elegans, Schiopsophus jamesii, unidentified, Philacteanus rutilans, Sternocera sternicornis, Chrysochroa rajah, Chrysochroa ocellata, unidentified, Chrysochroa fulminans, Carabus lafossei, Chrysochroa vittata és Sternocera sternicornis. |
