Summary: This photograph was distributed to the press when physicist Irène Joliot-Curie (1897-1956) was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with her husband Frédéric Joliot (1900-1958) for the discovery of artificial radioactivity. In 1936, the couple toured the United States, and was feted at many celebratory occasions. An elaborate brochure for the April 14, 1936, banquet hosted by women chemists at an American Chemical Society meeting in Kansas City, for example, praised the importance of their work and their devotion to science
