ate sixteenth or early seventeenthcentury, and he bases his remarks upon the writings of Felitano Macedonico,an equally unknown writer. In the technical part of his treatise Petrinidescribes a spring gun made for King Charles I of England and gives somecareful drawings of gun-locks, pistols, and combined weapons, such asswords and pistols, and swords and compasses. Under the heading ofOrdnance he illustrates two cannon joined at the base-ring and set at anangle of 45deg. to each other, intended to fire shot joined by a chain. Itwould be interesting to learn from a practical experiment what happened tothe chain on the discharge. Like other scientific writers of this period,the author concludes with the well-worn idea of perpetual motion attainedby a water wheel which worked a pump and was fed by the water which itraised. The remainder of this class consists of works of reference, lithographs,drawings, and photographs of the armour which will be found exhibited onthe Gun Floor. Plate XI

Armour (Middle of XVth Century) commonly known as Gothic.—The sallade is open-faced, with no visor. It is probable thatthis existed formerly, but the holes in which the visor-pins turned havebeen filled up. It bears the mark of Antonio da Missaglia (circa 1490), repeated twice. Thegorget, composed ^*of several lames fk \with wide shoul- -^-^•^der-plates, is oflater date, and doesnot belong to thearmour. The breastis in two parts,with shallow flutings on bothplates, the upper portionbearing an armourers mark.The back is of four parts, anarrow, central plate withtwo side plates riveted onand one lower horizontalplate articulated to the twoside plates. The taces con-sist of four lames, the lowestbeing semicircular at itsextreme edge. Thebesagues,or rondels, sixteen-sided inform, are hung from thegorget.
