Description
Nederlands: In 1122 werd de Kromme Rijn bij Wijk bij Duurstede afgedamd. In 1865 werd aan de oostzijde van de stad een inundatiekanaal gegraven van 350 meter lang. Dit militaire project was nodig om de inundatie rondom Utrecht te versnellen. Tussen Nederrijn en Kromme Rijn werd in 1865 een inudatiesluis gebouwd om de watertoevoer te reguleren. De militaire functie is verloren gegaan, maar de sluis speelt nog altijd een rol om de Utrechtse grachten door te spoelen.
English: In 1122 the Kromme Rijn near Wijk bij Duurstede was dammed. In 1865, an inundation channel of 350 meters long was dug on the east side of the city. This military project was necessary to accelerate the inundation around Utrecht. An inudation sluice was built in 1865 between Nederrijn and Kromme Rijn to regulate the water supply. The military function has been lost, but the lock still plays a role in refreshing the water in de Utrecht canals.
