Summary

Description

Black Hand Tunnel - old railroad tunnel through the Black Hand Sandstone in Ohio, USA.

This tunnel was cut in 1903 by the Columbus, Newark & Zanesville Electric Railway and became part of an operating line in 1904. In 1906, the railroad's name was Ohio Electric Railway. The line was started in 1890 as an interburban railway between Newark and Granville, Ohio - the first of its kind in America. The line was extended to Zanesville in the early 1900s. This tunnel was part of that extension work. Trolleys provided passenger service through here until 1929. By the 1930s or 1940s, the railroad was converted to an automobile road. When Dillon Dam and Dillon Reservoir were constructed downstream from here in the 1950s and early 1960s, the road was abandoned. A little west of here, the old interurban road bed has been replaced by a modern railroad.
