Text Appearing Before Image:
t must be understood that those practicing neurotology are notneurologists, nor do they attempt to make neurologic diagnoses. They feel that just as the ophthalmologist may be of service to theneurologist in the examination of the eyes and the optic nerves withtheir intracranial pathways, so the otologist may be of assistanceby examining the ears and the eighth nerves with their pathwaysthrough the neuraxis, cerebellum, and cerebrum. Every case ofvertigo, regardless of primary cause, is ultimately the result ofa disturbance of the vestibular apparatus (static labyrinths andvestibular nerves, with their brain pathways and nuclei). Forthis reason every case of vertigo should be examined neurotologi-cally. With few exceptions, the portion of the vestibular apparatusdisturbed can be localized and often the nature of the disturbancecan be ascertained. Lesions in the static labyrinth, ramus vestib-ularis, neuraxis, cerebellum, and cerebrum can often be localized 56 INTERSTATE MEDICAL JOURNAL

Perhaps the happiest of neurotologic func-tions is the prevention of unnecessary operations.
