It is impossible to differentiate suchstones as I have just described by their physical characteristicsbecause their physical characteristics are identical. The only cer-tain method of differentiation lies in determining their anatomicallocation. This is done by determining the proximity of the stoneto either the anterior or posterior abdominal wall. The methodsby which this information is determined are found in the realmof refined roentgen technic; and unless this technic is followed withdue regard for fine detail, it will not be productive of results. The following are the various methods which have served adefinite purpose in the anatomical location and differentiation ofthese calculi. 1. The shadow of a renal calculus is much smaller and moreclearly defined with the plate posterior and the tube anterior (Fig.19). The shadow of a biliary calculus is much smaller and more

If theseconditions are reversed, the stone appears much larger and lessclearly defined (Fig. 20). 2. If the plates are made and viewed stereoscopically, renal cal-culi appear in a posterior plane near the vertebral column, whilebiliary calculi appear in an anterior plane just above or beneaththe costal arch (Fig. 11, 21).
