eing stillof military age he was ordered to the colors during the mobilizationwhich was general throughout Europe. He sent his wife to Londonwith instruction to await there news from him, as he intended todesert from his regiment, join her and return with her to theirhome and business in America. For days theyfeared arrest realizing fully the consequences of such an eventuality,and it was not until they got off the steamship and had left the pierin New York that they felt safe. When they reached New Orleansthree days later, both were on the verge of nervous collapse, but herformer trouble did not return. After seeing three cases, we began looking for trouble aboutthe appendix whenever we found spasmodic contractions of thestomach especially of the pylorus, with no six-hour residue, and noroentgen evidences of disease of the stomach and the duodenal cap.
