SAINT PAUL In the two hundred yearsbetween the making of thesestatues, Gothic art gained thefluent realism exemplified inthe Saint Paul. It bears aclose resemblance to the workof Claus Sluter, the maker ofthe famous Well of theProphets at Dijon, and isattributed to Sinters nephew,Claus de Werve. The earlyhistory of the statue is notknown, but in 1792 it was pur-chased from the Dominicanconvent at Poligny—a littletown in the mountainous re-gion of the Jura—by a certainClaude Antoine Dubois, inwhose family it remained untilrecently.
