From a thirteenth centurymanuscript recently acquiredby the Metropolitan Museumof Art there have been takencertain pages for exhibition,one oj which is reproduced onthis page—an illuminationthat represents tins Gothic artat its finest. In tins period ojGothic illumination the hiera-tic, symbolical style inheritedfrom the preceding centuryhatl become full oj the newei spirit of naturalism, Inil hadnot lost its grandeur in at-tempting trivial realism. The illuminators oj that period followed the conventions oj the painter:stained glass, a fact apparent in this illumination through its pure flatcolors ami its masses outlined as sbarpli as though drawn on class.Its naturalism is traceable to the impulse for instruction, the mainpurpose oj Gothic art.
