Description
English: Alabaster effigy of John Willoughby, 3rd Baron Willoughby (1328/9-1372) of Eresby in the parish of Spilsby, Lincolnshire. Willoughby Chapel in St James's Church, Spilsby. On his tabard are sculpted in relief the arms of his ancestor Beke of Eresby: Gules, a cross recerclée argent, which arms were adopted (in lieu of his paternal arms of Willoughby) by his grandfather Robert de Willoughby, 1st Baron Willoughby (d.1317), whose mother was Alice Beke (d.1311), daughter and co-heiress of John Beke, 1st Baron Beke (d.1303/4) of Eresby (brother of Anthony Beke, Bishop of Durham (d.1311)) (G. E. Cokayne, The Complete Peerage, n.s., Vol XII/2, p.658, note a).
