To increase the number of passengers who could load at one time Peter Witt streetcars were designed to use a crew of two. All passengers boarded at the front door, and exited through the center doors. Passengers who proceeded to the rear of the vehicle paid their fare when they passed the second crew member. Passengers in the front half of the vehicle would deposit their fare during their exit.
Eventually TTC vehicles reverted to a single crew member, deposit fare on entry system.
The TTC's new Flexity Outlook streetcars, and the MetroLinx Flexity Freedom light rail vehicles allow boarding through all four doors. Passengers will be trusted to carry a transfer, or pass, or pay their fare upon entry. Many stops will be equipped with a ticket machine.
