Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Interior of Hull City Hall Hull Sinfonietta, Hull University Choir and Orchestra taking their places at the start of a concert which commemorated the 200th anniversary of the passing of the Act of Parliament that banned the slave trade. The act was promoted by William Wilberforce, who was MP for Hull in the early 19th century. The concert featured a new work by Alastair Borthwick, Equiano's Lament, which used the words of Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797), who was taken into slavery at the age of 11, but eventually purchased his freedom, campaigned against slavery and wrote his life story "The Interesting Narrative". It also used words from Wilberforce's speech to Parliament in 1789 and from the Bible.
