DescriptionInteresting vessels in Two Harbors.jpg |
The US Army Corps of Engineers tug boat Billmaier and the Crane Barge H. J. Schwartz were tied to the breakwater in Two Harbors, MN when I visited. They were planning to be there through Wednesday to some repair work to the stone at the base of the breakwater. The tug is was originally YTB 799, the USS Natchitoches. I love the abbreviation YTB. It stands for "Yard Tug - Big". It was delivered to the US Navy in May of 1969. In 2001 it was decommissioned from the Navy and transferred to the US Army Corps of Engineers. It is currently based in Duluth, MN and travels the Great Lakes, towing the crane barge you see here. One other piece of trivia I learned is that both the tug and the crane barge are manned by civilians, despite being owned and operated by the US Army. Weird, huh? By the way -- did you notice the grey colored rubber bumpers on the bow? Navy (and in this case former Navy) tugs usually have grey rubber bumpers so they don't leave black marks on the grey navy ships they nudge around. |
