Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Map of Palaos islands [i.e. Palau Islands] also known as the Novae Philippinae (as they were situated directly east of the Philippines) and the westernmost point of the S. Lazari [i.e. St. Lazarus] Archipelago [i.e. now referred to as the Caroline Islands]. The map features the seatrack of the San Trinidad led by Francisco Padilla. In 1710 the Spanish explorer Don Francisco Padilla with three Jesuit missionaries aboard the Santissima Trinidad set out from Manilla to search for the Palaos Islands, notoriously hard for the Spanish to find because the islands are so small. The map shows on Nov. 30 he reached Sonsorol [i.e. Sonsorol Islands] to the south of Palau. By Dec. 10th, 1710 they reach a southern island in the Palau group but were unable to land. He returned to the Philippines in Jan. 1711. The map, however, is not according to scale, the islands are disproportionate in size, shape and distance and far more numereous (the map title estimates 87 islands) when in fact there are far less in the Caroline Islands, which Padilla did not explore.

At top right of sheet: Zu Num. 37, in dem 11, und zu Num. 127 in dem VI Theil.

Map originally drawn by Jesuit Fr. Paul Klein based on hearsay descriptions from native Carolinians and first issued in 1706.

Map no. 606, Theil IV from: Der Neue Weltbott mit allerhand Nachrichten dern Missionariorum Societatis Jesu / Josef Stöcklein. Augsburg : J. Stocklein, 1726.
