Dann dass berühmte Ritornell in der Arie der
"Iphigenie auf Tauris:" "O laßt mich Tiefgebeugte
Weinen" (Akt II Szene 4) Und dieses Kindes-
schreien des Orchesters, als Alceste mitten in der
Begeisterung ihrer heldenmütigen Aufopferung
plötzlich von dem Gedanken an ihre kleinen Söhne
ergriffen wird und die Stelle des Thema: "Leben
ohne dich, mein Gemahl hastig unterbricht, um
dem rührenden Appell der Instrumente mit dem
herzzerreißenden Ausrufe: "Geliebte Kinder" zu
antworten (Akt I Szene 5)... Und die in der Arie der
Armide vorkommende Dissonanz der kleinen Se-
kunde, bei den Worten: "Rette, mich vor der Lie-
be Glut" (Partiturbeispiel 62). Das alles ist erha-
ben, nicht nur durch die dramatische Idee, die
Tiefe des Ausdrucks, die Hoheit und Schönheit
der Melodie, sondern auch durch die Instrumen-
tation und die bewundernswerte Wahl gerade der
Oboe unter der Menge der übrigen Instrumente,
die sich sämtlich hierzu als unzulänglich oder un-
fähig erweisen würden.
