Summary
[edit]DescriptionInstructions from William Hobson to Henry Williams (16320741885).jpg |
In March 1840, Henry Williams – the missionary who had translated the Treaty of Waitangi into Māori, and translated the words of William Hobson during the hui – offered to help gather more signatures around the country. Other missionaries were also authorised to act as official negotiators. This is a copy of the letter written by Hobson to Williams on 23 March. In it he thanks Williams for the kind offer to “treat with the Principal Native Chiefs in the Southern parts of these Islands for their adherence to the Treaty,” and advises him the schooner Ariel will be ready for him on 30 March. Williams left the Bay of Islands on 2 April with his sheet, and another sheet for his brother William Williams in Tūranga.
