It practically severs the arteriesthat gave life to this river, and it becomes necessary to build a reinforced concrete canalwith a most elaborate draining system. Atfifty-foot intervals, or closer when necessary,8-inch tile is laid with open joints under thecanal and out through the lower berm; butevery drop of water that can be picked up willbe collected and dropped into the top of thecanal. The tunnel which leads the water from thereservoir to the canal passes under a precipi-tous piece of country, and besides beingattacked from either end it will be opened atan intermediate point so as to make fourworking faces. This tunnel is the only partof the construction work that can be prose-cuted through the winter months owing to thegreat depth of snow at this altitude.
