| Description |
A NGO employee and water committee member scale a slippery canyon wall, relying on the water scheme’s distribution main for support. This scheme, situated in the hilly area of Mid-Western Nepal, is supplied by a spring source that provides for the village’s fresh water needs. A REACH Catalyst project revealed that the source’s condition strongly influences the quality of water at collection taps. Now during the Accelerated phase of the project, researchers from Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and Eawag are improving drinking water quality for 21 gravity-fed piped schemes, including source protection and intake improvement measures. As is usual in the region, such spring sources are not easily accessible, making continuous maintenance extremely challenging, especially during the monsoon season when the small stream shown will turn into a thunderous torrent.
