The colour is very dark brown,with a coating of yellow down on the thorax, and a black bandacross the base of the abdomen. We now take an example of the typical genus, Tabanushilaris, an East Indian insect. The general colour is reddish brown. The head is wliite, thethorax is traversed by two grey streaks, and the abdomen bythree similar stripes. The large compound eyes are divided into PI ATE XX
