English: The polish rail industry is arguably the most interesting at the moment, and not just since DB ordered 470 PESA LINK. Many larger or smaller companies there believe that there is a lot of future in building rail vehicles, for the domestic polish market, all of eastern Europe, and more and more, the west, with its many established train builders. The sign this year: Two separate polish companies announced their families of international, modular high-powered electric locomotives. Pesa showed their Gama, while ZNLE (of previous Dragon/E6ACT fame) is presenting the Griffin.
Griffin is a modular platform for freight and passenger electric locomotives, in DC, AC or four-system versions and with two different top speeds. It was developed in less than twenty months, and competes directly with the latest and greatest from Siemens, Bombardier, and possibly Alstom, if they ever finish their Prima II. One thing you can say about the polish offerings: Their designs sure are memorable. Now, the big question is whether there will be orders. None of the contenders have managed to sell more than ten of their next-generation electric locomotive designs in Europe so far, but clearly, they are hopeful for the future. |
