Het zijn maar enkele eigenschappen die op de Finse dirigent-componist Esa-Pekka Salonen geplakt kunnen worden. Ook Beethoven zocht in zijn Tweede Symfonie naar zijn eigen geluid. Hij gaf de tradities van het classicisme een romantische glans met gewaagde harmonische wendingen, experimentele vormstructuren en een grensverleggende drive. Gustav Mahler trachtte zijn leven lang zijn persoonlijke en muzikale identiteit te definiëren. Zijn Eerste ‘Titan’ Symfonie is een aangrijpende, eerder ironische getuigenis van zijn ambigue relatie met de Duitse cultuur: van de sublimatie van de natuur en de volksdans, over een dodenmars met zigeunerinvloeden tot het volkswijsje Broeder Jacob in mineur. Après dix-huit saisons extrêmement réussies à la tête du Los Angeles Philharmonic, Salonen dirige depuis quelques années le Philharmonia Orchestra de Londres. Le succès y est de nouveau au rendez-vous. Beethoven cherchait une sonorité personnelle dans sa Symphonie n° 2, qui fait briller d'un nouvel éclat romantique les traditions sclérosées du classicisme. La monumentale Symphonie n° 1 « Titan » de Mahler est un témoignage poignant et plutôt ironique sur ses rapports à la culture allemande. Elle passe de la sublimation de la nature et des danses populaires à la comptine « Frère Jacques » en mode mineur, en passant par une marche des morts tordue à influences tziganes. Le sous-titre, « Titan », renvoie au roman homonyme, semi-autobiographique, de Jean Paul, auquel Mahler s'identifiait fortement. English: !! He is a masterful motivator, is highly socially engaged, and has a constant desire for renewal. After an exceptionally successful eighteen seasons at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a few years ago Salonen took charge of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, again to great acclaim. Beethoven too was in search of his own sound in his Second Symphony. He enlivened the fossilised traditions of Classicism with a Romantic gloss. Mahler’s monumental First Symphony, ‘Titan’, is a moving, rather ironic testimony to his ambiguous relationship with German culture: from the sublimation of nature and the folk dance, to a contorted funeral march with gypsy influences, to the folk tune ‘Frère Jacques’ in a minor key. The nickname ‘Titan’ alludes to Jean Paul’s eponymous, semi-autobiographical novel, with which Mahler strongly identified. |
