Jerusalem Quartet Nederlands: Erwin Schulhoff was amper tien toen hij op aanbeveling van Dvorák het Praagse conservatorium binnenstapte. Lang zat hij er niet: liever reisde hij naar Parijs en Keulen, waar hij studeerde bij Debussy en Reger. In Wenen sloot hij vriendschap met Webern en Berg. Tijdens dit concert zet het Jerusalem Quartet Schulhoffs ‘Vijf Stukken voor strijkkwartet’ op de lessenaars. De vijf miniatuurtjes zijn al even avontuurlijk en kleurrijk als zijn biografie: Weense walsjes wisselen stuivertje met tango's en Tsjechische volksmuziek. Op de achtergrond loert Schulhoffs levenslange liefde voor jazz. Een heel andere wind waait doorheen het Eerste Strijkkwartet van Bedrich Smetana. De ondertitel, ‘Uit mijn leven’, laat weinig twijfel bestaan over de autobiografische inhoud die reikt van prille jeugdliefdes tot Smetana's worsteling met zijn plotselinge doofheid. Met zijn Veertiende Strijkkwartet schreef Mozart het eerste van zijn Haydnkwartetten. Dat de oude meester in zijn nopjes was met de stukken mag blijken uit wat hij vader Leopold toevertrouwde: “Op mijn erewoord, uw zoon is de grootste componist die ik ken”. Français : Erwin Schulhoff avait à peine dix ans quand, sur recommandation de Dvorák, il entra au Conservatoire de Prague. Il n'y resta cependant pas longtemps, car il préféra poursuivre sa formation à Paris et à Cologne auprès de Debussy et de Reger. À Vienne, il se lia d'amitié avec Webern et Berg. Lors de ce concert, le Jerusalem Quartet donne les « Cinq Pièces pour quatuor à cordes » de Schulhoff. Ces cinq miniatures sont aussi mouvementées et hautes en couleurs que la biographie du compositeur. Des valses viennoises y jouent aux quatre coins avec des tangos et des airs populaires tchèques, tandis qu'en toile de fond résonne le grand amour que Schulhoff voua toute sa vie au jazz. Un tout autre vent souffle sur le Quatuor à cordes n° 1 de Bedrich Smetana. Son sous-titre, « De ma vie », laisse peu de doutes sur sa nature autobiographique. Smetana y évoque ses premières amours de jeunesse, mais aussi ses difficultés à accepter sa soudaine surdité. Le Quatuor à cordes n° 14 de Mozart est le premier de ses quatuors dédiés à Haydn. Le maître âgé appréciait énormément ces œuvres, comme le démontre le compliment qu'il adressa à Léopold, le père de Mozart : « Je vous le dis devant Dieu, votre fils est le plus grand compositeur que je connaisse. » English: Erwin Schulhoff was barely ten when he was admitted to the Conservatoire in Prague on the recommendation of Dvorák. In this concert, the Jerusalem Quartet will have Schulhoff’s ‘Five Pieces for String Quartet’ on their music stands. These five miniatures are as colourful and adventurous as his life: Viennese waltzes trade places with tangos and Czech folk music, while Schulhoff’s lifelong love of jazz echoes in the background. It’s a completely different wind that blows through Smetana’s First String Quartet. It’s subtitle, ‘From my life’, leaves little doubt of its autobiographical content, which ranges from early youthful loves to Smetana’s struggle with his sudden deafness. Mozart’s Fourteenth was the first of his Haydn quartets. It is apparent that the old master was delighted with these works from what he told Wolfgang’s father Leopold: “Upon my honour, your son is the greatest composer I know”. |
