Gerhard Gruber - Speedy Nederlands: Voor dit filmconcert werden we getipt door Till Fellner, pianist én filmliefhebber. In zijn vrije tijd is Fellner meestal te vinden in het Weense Filmmuseum. Daar raakte hij onder de indruk van de pianist Gerhard Gruber, die van live-improvisaties op stille films zijn specialiteit maakte. Al meer dan 450 stille films blies hij nieuw leven in. Grubers improvisaties verlenen kracht en spanning aan de beelden. Zonder alle aandacht op te eisen of zichzelf op de achtergrond te dringen. Muziek en film gaan een gelijkwaardige dialoog aan met elkaar. Gruber voelt zich het best in zijn element in komische films. In deSingel zal hij zijn fantasie botvieren op ‘Speedy’, de laatste stille film van de populaire filmkomiek Harold Lloyd. Die kent u ongetwijfeld van de iconische scène uit de film ‘Safety Last!’, waarin Lloyd belachelijk hoog aan de wijzer van een klok hangt te bengelen. In ‘Speedy’ speelt Lloyd een slungelige jongeman die door zijn obsessie voor baseball telkens zijn job verliest. Als het hem lukt de laatste paardentram van de ondergang te redden, wordt hij als een held gevierd. De film is volledig op locatie gedraaid in New York. Alleen al de unieke beelden van de ‘Big Apple’ in de jaren 1920 zijn een lust voor het oog. Français : C'est Till Fellner, pianiste et cinéphile, qui nous a donné l'idée de ce concert cinématographique. Pendant ses loisirs, il passe beaucoup de temps à la Cinémathèque de Vienne. Il y a été impressionné par le pianiste Gerhard Gruber, spécialiste des improvisations en direct pour accompagner les projections de films muets, qui a déjà donné un second souffle à 450 de ces films. Les improvisations de Gruber procurent de la puissance et de la tension aux images, sans attirer toute l'attention et sans jamais se faire valoir. Grâce à lui, la musique et le film engagent un dialogue à pied d'égalité. Gruber est franchement dans son élément quand il s'agit de films comiques. Chez nous, il va lâcher les rênes de son imagination en accompagnant « Speedy », l'ultime film muet du comique populaire Harold Lloyd. Vous connaissez sans doute la séquence légendaire du film « Safety Last! » où on le voit accroché à l'aiguille d'une horloge à une hauteur vertigineuse. Dans « Speedy », Lloyd joue un jeune homme dégingandé dont l'obsession du base-ball lui fait perdre un emploi après l'autre. Lorsqu'il parvient à sauver le tout dernier tram à cheval, il est fêté en héros. Le film a été entièrement tourné en extérieur à New York. Les images exceptionnelles de la « Grosse Pomme » dans les années 1920 valent déjà à elles seules le déplacement. English: We got the tip for this film concert from Till Fellner, pianist and film-lover. He spends much of his leisure time at the Film Museum in Vienna. While there, he was greatly impressed by the pianist Gerhard Gruber, who specializes in live improvisation to silent films. Gruber has already breathed new life into more than 450 silent films. His improvisations add vigour and excitement to the images while neither demanding all the attention nor withdrawing into the background. Music and film enter into a well-matched dialogue with each other. Gruber feels most in his element in comedy films. At deSingel he will give his imagination free rein in ‘Speedy’, the last silent film by the popular cinema comic Harold Lloyd. You are undoubtedly familiar with him from the iconic scene in ‘Safety Last!’ where he is hanging from the hand of a clock high above the street. In ‘Speedy’, Lloyd plays a lanky young man who is always losing his job because of his obsession with baseball. When he succeeds in saving the last horse-drawn tram from disappearing, he is celebrated as a hero. The film was shot entirely on location in New York. The unique images of the ‘Big Apple’ in the 1920s themselves make this film a visual treat. |
