Summary

[edit]
Description

Marble panel inlaid with various semiprecious stones, crafted in the late 1700s or early 1800s in India. Part of the exhibit "Art and Stories of Mughal India" at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

During the rule of Shah Jahan (1628 to 1658), Mughal craftsmen began to use inlaid marble widely. This was a major development in Mughal art. They favored floral and bird motifs, and polished the gemstones flush until they were flush with the surface of the marble. The Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, represents the peak of this type of work. Mughal craftsmen continued to do inlaid marble until the early 1800s.
