Summary
[edit]DescriptionInlaid Metal Wall Tile, Axum, Ethiopia (2823604582).jpg |
This is one of several ornate inlaid metal tiles in the collection of the Archaeological Museum in Axum, Ethiopia. It decorated the walls of an ancient structure during the Axumite period of Ethiopian history. The tile, even in its ruined state, speaks of a society with sophisticated tastes, a society open to aesthetic influences from other parts of the ancient world. Whether the tile was made locally or imported, it reflects a high level of craftsmanship and control over raw materials. I wish I knew more about it, e.g., what it's made of; whether it is a single piece of metal or several layers; where it was found; whether similar pieces have been found at other sites in Ethiopia or other countries; and whether anyone has attempted to reconstruct (e.g., by drawing) the structure or decorative scheme of which this tile was a part. I can't decide which is my favorite pattern. I've complied with restrictions on the use of flash, and taken photos only when permitted by the museum. |
