Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Information Board Ladybower. In the 1990's Seven Trent Water undertook substantial works to strengthen the dam. The result is a higher dam wall which can be seen quite clearly here. The original construction was the height of the walkway out to the tower. – The most controversial aspect of this work was the source of the stone used. In the end the company was allowed to extract this from the slopes of Win Hill adjacent to the reservoir. The argument against this was that this would permanently damage the appearance of the landscape. The alternative was to use stone quarried from Shire Hill, Glossop for the unquarried side of Shire Hill see here 941491, which would have involved a convoy of trucks negotiating the A57 Snake Pass for months. – It would seem that the correct decision was made as looking at Win Hill now you would not know that the quarrying had ever happened - it was in the area of the younger trees visible towards the top of the hillside in this picture.
