Description
English: Utilizando el telescopio Gemini Sur en Chile, operado por NOIRLab de NSF y AURA, un equipo de astrónomos observó la primera evidencia convincente de una estrella moribunda similar al Sol devorando un exoplaneta. Durante la mayor parte de su vida, las estrellas similares al Sol fusionan hidrógeno a helio en su núcleo denso y caliente, lo que le permite a la estrella contrarrestar el peso aplastante de sus capas exteriores. Cuando se agota el hidrógeno en el núcleo, la estrella comienza a fusionar helio en carbono y la fusión de hidrógeno migra a las capas externas de la estrella, lo que hace que se expandan y que estrellas similares al Sol se conviertan en una gigante roja.Sin embargo, esta transformación es una pésima noticia para cualquier planeta que se encuentre en el sistema interno, porque cuando la estrella finalmente se expande para engullir a uno de sus planetas, su interacción podría desencadenar un espectacular estallido de energía y material. Este proceso también frenaría la velocidad orbital del planeta haciéndolo sumergirse en la estrella.
