В диком виде встречается только в Мексике, но была широко распространена человеком по всему миру в тропических и субтропических областях, включая Европу. Растение цветёт лишь однажды в жизни и затем — отмирает. Громадный цветонос с множеством цветов, количество которых достигает до 17 тысяч, может достигать высоты 10-12 метров.
