Description

The Rushville Shale is an enigmatic stratigraphic unit in the Mississippian of Ohio. The type locality is gone. Shown above is a eastern Ohio roadcut inferred to contain the Rushville Shale interval. This is an outcrop of the upper Vinton Member (upper Logan Formation, Osagean Stage, upper Lower Mississippian). The gray shale interval marked under the text "nodule horizon>" is possibly the same as the Rushville Shale. A relative abundance of small mud nodules is present in the upper parts of the interval (the type locality also had such nodules). The nodules are often fossiliferous, with lingulid brachiopods, orbiculoids, bivalves, and even ammonoids (one specimen of Polaricyclus has been found so far).

The Rushville Shale type locality included a dolomitic carbonate unit below the shale interval. A dolomitic carbonate horizon also occurs at this site (here marked "<limestone horizon"). The lithology of that horizon varies laterally, but in many places it is a glauconitic fossiliferous dolostone having crinoid stem columnals and other typical marine invertebrates. Small crystal-lined vugs are moderately common. They contain calcite, pyrite, and aragonite.
