Summary
[edit]DescriptionInfant of Prague RC Church, Cheektowaga, New York - 20201125.jpg |
English: Infant of Prague Roman Catholic Church, 921 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga, New York, November 2020. Belying its relatively late date of construction (1962), the design of this church building hearkens back to the Italian Romanesque style that was more prevalent in the early 20th century: perhaps the most architecturally similar church in the Buffalo diocese is the former St. John the Evangelist on Seneca Street. Bedecking the front façade is a relatively modest-sized rose window, above which hangs a corbel table that cuts perpendicularly across pairs of twinned buttresses; the windows are narrow and topped with round arches, while the entrance is framed by a pair of engaged Solomonic columns (adding a tinge of Neo-Baroque influence) and a compound arch above. The red shingles covering the roof imitate the ruddy terra cotta tiles popularly used for the same purpose in Italy and elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Infant of Prague was founded in 1946 on the recommendation of Rev. Maurice Woulfe, pastor of the nearby Our Lady Help of Christians whose parish was growing explosively with the postwar flight of city residents to the suburbs. Worshipping originally in an old airplane hangar, a combination church and school building was erected around the corner on Foisset Lane in 1950 and replaced in short order with the current one, for which ground was broken in November 1959. |
