To develop an interest in the patronsand the public in general toward the ac-tivities of the schools. To contribute money to the Red Crossand a number of toys to the cause ofcharities. For the proper realization of these aimsit was decided to carry out the work forthe most part by the individual problemmethod. Each boy agreed to make one 138 TOY-MAKING AS A COMMUNITY PROJECT 139 toy for the Red Cross and one for thepoor children, and then he would makeone to keep for himself; then he wouldstart the circuit again. It was gratifyingto notice that there was no disposition onthe part of the pupils generally to pickout a better article to keep than thosethey had made to give away. of the maker of each toy on the article sothat when the toys were put out on tablespreliminary to the sale those interestedcould come and examine the work of cer-tain boys. Some of the Toys Ready for the Sale All materials for the construction of thetoys were solicited as a donation from thebusiness houses of the city. The lumberused was obtained from boxes which theboys gathered up. Nails, paint, watercolors, etc. were generously donated bythe different stores. Large tin cans wereutilized for parts of trucks, automobiles,etc. Another feature which helped to inter-est the public was the placing of the name their placards telling the place and thedate of the sale did a great deal to adver-tise the event. All the newspapers gaveliberal support to the work so that thepublic was well reminded of what was tohappen. Then came the much-longed-for da) ofthe sale—Wednesday evening Dec. 17.The tovs were sold in the Y. W. C. V.Hall which is the most centrally locatedmeeting place in the city.
