English: The green Lesser Sunda Islands form the southern arc of central Indonesia, traversing more than 1200 km (746 mi) across Indian Ocean as well as the Timor, Sawa, Banda, and Flores Seas. The entire Indonesian archipelago is volcanic in origin and, as part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, contain at least six active volcanoes.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Lesser Sunda Islands on July 25, 2019. The largest islands in the image are Flores, the long island running east to west; Sumba in the southwest; and Timor, in the southeast. |
