ohammedan nowbusied himself to brush aside the Hindu life and especially thefaith, and to establish here, on his southward march, all thesplendor of mosque and service which he had left behind him inPersia first, and then in Labor, Delhi, and Agra. All that wasneeded in Ajmir was a good pretext for a magnificent mosque.This was furnished in the life and death of Khwaja Mayud-ud-din Sanjar Chisti. He was of saintly character, and died in alittle chapel in the year 1235. Here on this spot must the greatAjmir mosque be reared. Temples there were already in greatnumber, such as were built in the early days, when forced laborAvas the usage and the crime. Bat they were Hindu buildings,and could well be subsidized to add splendor and beauty to themosque. The legend is, however, that the mosque was builtmiraculously, in two days and a half.
