[edit]DescriptionIndicium-1899-US-TypeI-Overprint2c.jpg |
English: U.S. two cents indicium depicting George Washington. Type I overprint of 2 centavos for use in occupied Cuba, 1899. The overprints were an expedient way to quickly produce envelopes for Cuba after the invasion and they were provisional in nature. They were sold for about 6 months until regular Columbus issues could be printed and distributed. This particular type of overprint was actually done in Cuba by the firm of Ruiz y Hermano which contracted for the job. It was applied to 67,000 white envelopes and 3,000 amber U.S. envelopes which had been brought to Cuba. |
