< Trails and Surveys 383 found a forest honv in Harrison and Washington counties.82This trace led from the Ohio river to the Buffalo trace, prob-ably near Hardinsba-g and on north. A short distance westof Blue river, on the Buffalo trace, there was a rangers camp.Here the Buffalo trace rangers had a division. The easterndivision was in charge of John Tipton, afterward a UnitedStates senator. The men on the western division were com-manded by Captain William Hargrove, a pioneer settler ofGibson county. He was born in South Carolina, in 1775, andserved as an Indian scout in Kentucky. He saw service atTippecanoe, and died in 1843. He lived near Princeton, wherehis descendants are prominent unto this day. It is quite likelythe division was near the junction of the Blue river and theBuffalo trace, once a corner of Clark and Knox counties,(1801).83 In General Harrisons order of September 1, 1807, to Wil-liam Hargrove, commanding first division of rangers, east ofthe Wabash river, we read
