irst Intothe glade, wheeled, fired and killed the first Indianto enter. Others, unable to see through the brushtill exposed to view, rushed into the trap till ninewarriors lay in a heap. Realizing this fact, aftersuch unexpected fatality, the pursuers raised thatdismal howl which means death and defeat, andfell back to their camp. The panic among some ofour men prevented pursuit. Fisher, commander at Mier seven years later ; Bartlett D.McClure, died in 1841; David Hauna, LandonWebster and Jonathan Scott. Dr. James H. C. Miller, who commanded, soonafter left Texas and settled in Michigan. Hisname has sometimes been confounded with that ofDr. James B. Miller, of Fort Bend, long distin-guished in public life under the province andrepublic of Texas.

I obtained the date, the number ofmen and the additional six names from Henry Stout, some jears later. It seems that on their return trip homewards, thesefourteen men were surrounded and beset by a largeparty of Indians, some of whom had been tradingin their camp before. Instead of opening fire, theIndians demanded the surrender of Humphreys tothem, describing him by t
