ch Davison compares to that of the big black-backed squirrel(Sciurus bicolor), that fine fellow as big as a cat which is soconspicuous in the forests ; the heiis also have the same sharpcry. The egg is known to be buff, and very like some hens eggs,as these birds have laid in captivity ; but no eggs seem to havebeen taken in the wild state, although the breeding-seasonappears to be known, and is said to be in the monsoon. White Eared-Pheasant. Crossoptilum tihetanum. This beautiful large white pheasant, with its snowy looseplumage so well set off by its purple-glossed tail and red face andlegs, has never been actually taken in British territory, thoughit is suspected of occurring on some of the Bhutan passes. It isreally a Tibetan and Chinese bird, and Hume was induced tofigure it chiefly in order to reproduce a copy of the figure of itgiven by Hodgson, who described it in 1838, and to quote hisdescription, whiah was buried in one of the earlier volumes ofthe Asiatic Societys Journal.
Text Appearing After Image:
O _1 uJ r^LD O o _J Q_ IDuJ KOKLASS PHEASANT 195 There is no need to repeat this description, as the bird is sodistinct that if it does turn up in British territory it cannot bemistaken for anything else ; but in it Hodgson seems to havebeen curiously mistaken in two points. He says, first, nothingat all about the curious erect white ear-tufts which the bird haslike the few other members of the Crossoptilum group—thoughit must be admitted that they are shortest in this species—nordoes his drawing show them. He also describes the birds tailas broadly convex, without any sign of the galline compressionand curve, the fact being that in all these eared pheasants thetail is folded and fowl-like, with the top feathers curved, andeven looser-webbed than the rest. Hodgsons bird was got froma Nepalese envoy who had been to Pekin, but it is now too lateto ask where he got it ! In China, according to Pere David, this bird inhabits bushylocalities and is very sedentary and sociable, even duri
