ny elevation up to 4,500 feet;they especially frequent densely-w^ooded ravines and nullahs, andit has been noticed that the green-legged hill-partridge (Tropico-perdix chloropics) and the present bird are never found in the samevalley, which points to some competition or conflict betweenthem. In Pegu, where Oates observed this, it was found thatthese hill-partridges were only found on the eastern slopes of thehills, the western declivities being only clothed with jungle toothin to meet their requirements in the w^ay of cover. Here theywere living almost entirely on hard seeds. At Thoungyah, Humes collector, Darling, found them socommon that he saw two or three coveys every day ; from six toten formed a covey, but they were not easy to get. GREEN-LEGGED HILL-PARTRIDGE 2i9 scattering into the dense underbrush. Tickell, who firstdescribed the species, says they cannot be flushed more thanonce, and when they had settled in the shelter of a bush theywould squat till they were within a yard of the muzzle of hisgun.
