ents the same sort of grass and mud cover on wetground, and feeds in a similar way; now and then four or fivebirds together may be seen out feeding on turf or grassy banksnear the rice fields or wet thickets in the early morning, butcommonly they go singly or in pairs. Like button-qnail, theywill rise to a dog readily enough the first time, but will riskcapture rather than get up again; and they do not fly many yardsin any case. They can swim if put to it, but are not water-birdsin the sense that moorhens and some of the crakes are. This species is not apparently migratory, though a wide-rang-ing bird, and found throughout south-east Asia to Celebes. Itnests at the waters edge in grass, rice, or similar cover, makinga pile of rushes and grass, and laying about half a dozen whiteor pink eggs with reddish and mauve markings of various sizes, chiefly towards the large end. They may be found as early asMay, or as late as October. This bird is called Kana-koH inTelugu ; in Burmese Yay-gyet.

£«- ^tS!^- BANDED CEAKE 105 Banded Crake. Balliiia superciliaris* The banded crake, although barred with black-and-whitebelow like the long-billed rails, has a shorter bill and toes thanthese birds, though the beak has not the almost fowl-like formfound in some of the short-billed crakes and the moorhens; itis rather over an inch long, the bird being about as large as asnipe. The general colour above is chestnut in front, and greenish-brown on the back ; but only in adult males is the chestnutdeveloped all over the head and neck; young birds are browneven here, and hens, except perhaps old ones, have the crown andback of the neck brown. The legs are grey, and the bill brownand green. The banded crake is seldom found outside Ceylon ; but itis believed to have been found breeding about Karwar andKhandalla, and specimens have been got in many other localitiesin the Empire, from Oudh to Singapore, so that it might beexpected to occur anywhere. Even in Ceylon it is only to befound from O
