Description |
English: The Tlingit people lived in the area around Sitka, Alaska. As news of the gold strikes spread in the late 1890s, many people poured into the old Russian fur trading port. The coming of the gold seekers greatly disrupted the traditional life of the Tlingit. Tlingit men hired themselves out as packers for the miners, and women sold handicrafts in the town.
This July 1897 photo shows Tlingit women selling baskets, beadwork, pottery, and other craft items in Sitka. All of the women have turned their faces away from the photographer.
