This chamber is always straight or but slightly curved,and comparatively narrow \vhen compared with the rest of the gallery inthe wood above it. Having prepared the chamber, it plugs the top with amass of gnawed wood, and lines the sides at times, if not always, with apapery lining of a brownish fibrous material. If it has not previously doneso, it now backs out of the chamber into the broader tunnel above, turnsround in this, and proceeds backwards down into the chamber again andbuilds across the top of the latter a thick white wall of some calcareoussubstance, lining the sides of the chamber with the same material for ashort way down. This wall effectually blocks up the chamber and preventsthe entrance of enemies, who would be able to attack and feed upon thehelpless insect whilst in its quiescent or pupal state.
