These treeshave been felled with the expresspurpose of enabling the forest officerto keep himself informed as to thepresence of and abundance of thebark-boring and timber-boring in-sect pests which infest the parti-cular species of tree of which hisforest is composed. By cutting offa square of bark at the period atwhich he knows the insects willbe on the wing in the forest, hewill be able at once to ascertaintheir abundance. For both bark-borers and wood-borers will resortto these freshly felled trees to ovi-posit instead of searching for sicklytrees or fresh windfalls in the forestitself.
