Date: Circa 1960s Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Ross Hall Studios, Dexter Press (#44781-C) Postmark: None Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: Postoffice Lake, situated in Idaho County, Idaho, is located approximately forty miles northeast of Pierce, Clearwater County, Idaho. Text printed on reverse - POSTOFFICE LAKE and THE LOLO SKYLINE TRAIL. The historical route followed the ridge in the background for a distance of 80 miles in crossing the Bitterroot Range. For centuries, the Nez Perce Indians (around Lewiston, Idaho) trekked annually to the Montana buffalo grounds in late June to return in late August with their winter meat. Lewis and Clark were caught by an 8" snowfall on this ridge, on a Sept. 16 where Capt. Lewis reported, "I was never so wet and cold in every part, all my life -" Travel over the high ridges, with loaded travois was possible even though difficult, whereas early day caravans would have found it impossible to move across the mountain sides or river route.
