. Mr. Lee, who was on a tour for the purpose of raisingfunds to support his valuable establishment. At New York,Philadelphia, and other places, the young Indian addressed large STUMANU. 171 congregations, in his native tongue, on the destitute condition ofhis people, their readiness to learn from the white people, and theample field that was spread open to those whose benevolence mightinduce them to take pity on the poor savages of the farther west.Some of these addresses were of a very impressive character, andMr. Lee, who interpreted them, assured the congregations thatwhat Stumanu said was wholly his own in conception and language.On the eve of the departure of the Rev. Mr. Lee to the sceneof his labors on the Wallamette, Stumanu, flushed w^th the pros-pect of once more mingling with his kindred land friends, andgratified with all he had seen of the white mans capacity andpowers, was taken suddenly ill, in New York, and after a shortbut severe attack, died on the 29th of May, 1839.

A CHIPPEWAY CHIEF. OKEEMAKEEaUID, Our acquaintance witli Okeemakeequid began and ended in1826, at La Fond du Lac Superior. On arriving there, amongthe multitude of Lidians, collected for the purpose of attending atreaty, our interest was at once excited in relation to Okeemakee-quid. His countenance was intellectual, and wore an unusuallycivilized expression. After having been at La Fond du Lac for somedays, we determined to have built a first rate canoe of bark, whichis the only kind of canoe used in these lake regions. On inquiringfor an experienced hand among the Indians, for that purpose, wewere referred to Okeemakeequid. He appeared directly, and thebargain was soon made. On expressing our apprehensions thatthe structure of the canoe might consume more time than we couldspare, we were told to name our own time. We did so, and theanswer was, it shall he done.
