An Ascetic Shaiva Deity |

Description |
English: The elaborate hairdo and the strap that helps to keep his legs in position identify this figure as a yogi and an ascetic. He sits on a cushion with his legs crossed at the ankles. His large, bulging eyes, too, are signifiers of the inner heat of a powerful yogi. He has a well-groomed beard and moustache, both of which are standard features of royal portraits in Madhya Pradesh sculptures. However, he is completely devoid of any ornament and wears only a narrow sash tied diagonally across his torso. Nevertheless, his elongated earlobes, as one sees in Buddhist images, and the four arms indicate that he is a deity. |
