TWO SIDES TO THE RACIAL MEDAL do know is that, from the corner-stone to the coping ofthe highest gopura, they are the product of gloomy, perverted,morbidly overwrought imaginations, revelling in the mostextravagant features of the most monstrous of all myth-ologies. This temple of Madura is by no means the oldestof its kind : it dates, for the most part, from the sixteenthand seventeenth centuries. It is not the largest, though tomake its circuit you have to walk a good mile. But iteasily surpasses the others I have seen—Trichinopoly andTanjore—in its labyrinthine gloom.
