ART AND CULTURE essentially foreign, in the glory of which India herself hadno share. Hindu influences on Muslim building are oftenpatent to the most cursory observer. At Fatehpur Sikri,for instance—that unburied Pompeii of the East—theprevailing style is essentially Hindu. So, too, in thatexquisite structure, Dada Harirs well at Ahmedabad, thereis nothing characteristically Muslim—except moderationand good taste. It may even be that Mr. Havell is rightin maintaining that the Muhammadans brought with themscarcely any form or method that had not been independentlyevolved in India. That, I say, is possible, if not veryprobable.
